BBK: In Class Music Video Response

  • 'Isles' by the Little Comets presents residents of the United Kingdom in a stereotypical way. It seems as though the video focuses on the working class communities across the UK. This representation reminds me of other textual views of this society from directors such as Shane Meadows.
  • This view may be a reflection on the bands meta-narrative and give the audience insight into the bands background.
  • There are several techniques within the video that could be helpful when developing our own ideas as a group. For example the use of unfocused edges around a long shot to make the scene appear as if a model could prove effective within our own piece of which loneliness may play a keep part, this technique could be used to present someone as feeling small or segregated.
  • The videos colour grading is also interesting, the shots seem very dull in colour and drained with a blue tint creating a gritty and melancholy atmosphere which could also be useful in our music video.

  • Massive Attack's 'Live With Me' connoted representations of loneliness of the protagonist who is seen to drink her sorrows away excessively.
  • This representation may be part of our own video when presenting our female character, however this particular representation may be too extreme for the tone of our video as we would like to preserve both of our characters innocence whilst presenting them as alone.
  • However there are aspects to this video which are intriguing, in particular the ending sequence in which the protagonists demise is represented though the imagery of her falling down what seems to be an infinite spiral staircase. The use of surreal metaphorical imagery that does not conform to the continuity and may be open to interpretation interests me and could be a point of reference for our own video.
  • A similar tone and style can be seen in Arctic Monkeys 'When the Sun Goes Down'

  • 'When the sun goes down' is a lo fi narrative music video adapted from a short film that was based around the Artic Monkeys song.
  • It depicts the story of a prostitute and her struggle in day to day life set in the industrial area of Sheffield.
  • Both this video and 'Live with me' give a representation of women as unhappy and being passively controlled by something, in this video by the man who could be a pimp or a violent regular who is credited as 'scummy man' and in 'Live with me' the woman is controlled by alcohol. These representations of woman are somewhere in the middle of dominant and emergent and residual. Using a rare representation of female alcoholism as well as portraying woman as weak and controlled.
