BS: Semiotic Music Video Analysis (Performance)

The Family Rain - You Should Be Glad You've Got a Man - 2014

This track compiles upbeat drumming alongside the recognizable summery sound of guitar and vocals; as well as conforming to the band's blues/ rock genre
There is not a huge amount of iconic signs and visual signifiers within this video. Clearly this is a performance based video featuring the band's drummer in each shot, nearly always playing the drums. This video was made by the band and is very low-fi with a small budget, this is shown throughout the video as the shots are very simply constructed with no aftereffects or a great deal of editing. This could be interpreted as iconic emphasizing the bands musical talent, especially as they are a relatively small band they want to establish an early style and image for the band which seemingly by their outfits and style is individual.

In each shots the band name can be seen in bold red letters on the front of the drum kit, again this could be seen as an iconic sign perhaps representing a form of advertising themselves without using more complicated and costly editing.

Within the music video the audience can see the other 2 band members distracting and disrupting the drummer, this conforms to the social myth and stereotype that younger people are reckless and rebellious

  1. This is a good video to pick Ben but I don't think you really understand semiotics. I will go over it in class and you will need to come back to this and select more signifiers.
