BS: Three Music Videos Analysis

1.       Sia – Chandelier

Applying dyer:

n  There is no construction of “Star image” within this music video as the pop star herself does not feature at all within the video.

n  This unique music video involving a girl dressed as a doll dancing could be considered as a different construction of star image in order to promote the artist. By creating such a different music video it is memorable to its viewers which will promote the song as oppose to the way the artist looks and boost sales this way.

Applying Goodwin:

n  The music video appears to have no relevance to the lyrics, and the visual imagery does not match the music, therefore this is a disjunctive piece with no involvement from the artist or showing any instruments to show the artists musical ability.

n  The construction of shots within this music video is pretty much the constant throughout, using a long shot to show the girl dancing which is not uncommon within disjunctive music videos as the artist is not the main focus and is promoting the music rather than the artist

n  Lastly this music video is shot in one continuous line of action, this again separates the visuals from the music as the audience see no cutting in time to the music

Applying semiotics:

n  There are very few, if not any visual signifiers or signs within this music video.

n  This video is situated in one location, a house that looks dirty and badly kept, this could be seen as a juxtaposing visual signifier as the lyrics “I want to swing from the chandelier” may connote this person wants to live a life of riches and wealth

2.       Katy Perry – Roar

Applying Dyer:

n  Within this video there is construction of “star image” as Katy Perry the pop singer features heavily throughout the video

n  The artist is lip syncing the words throughout the video which presents a performance aspect within the video

Applying Goodwin:

n  The lyrics and visual imagery are connected strongly which makes this piece extremely illustrative, it seems as if the visuals are a story line and narrative for the music and lyrics

n  Because Katy Perry is the artist as well as the main actress within the video it makes it seem more realistic and engages the audience to a higher degree

Applying semiotics:

n  There are many visual signifiers within this music video, which help to anchor and emphasis the music and lyrics an example is when the word “roar” is sung you can hear the real roar of a lion played at the same time

n  After effects have also been used to help convey certain messages, such as in the storyline when the artist is becoming more bold and courageous often the audience can see a lion’s face to emphasis these emotions and feelings

n  Body language is also important within this piece as in this particular story line it is important in understanding the protagonist is becoming more confident as the video progresses, this is shown by stronger body position and posture

3.       OneRepublic – Counting Stars

Applying Dyer:

n  A heavy sense of Star image is shown from the outset of this video, including the performance aspect of the band playing their instruments and singing, this also includes facial close ups to emphasis this aspect

n  The clothes worn by the band are individual, wearing skinny clothing, this again promotes the band’s style

Applying Goodwin:

n  The lyrics and visual imagery are equally balanced between the band and the theatrical musical performance aspect, as well as a form of narrative which runs alongside this

n  Because there is a small story line that is applicable to some parts of the song this video is an amplified piece which clearly has come from the line “I’ve been praying hard” which is supported by footage of people in some sort of religious ceremony

        Applying Semiotics:

n  There are some visual signifiers, such as all the instruments, clearly this emphasises the musical aspect of the band and shows the musical talent and present

n  There are also religious symbols such as touching (healing) people, holding hands, singing and clapping
